Whispers from the Past: Unearthing Civil War Secrets

It is no secret that Lewisburg is home to some amazing references to its unforgotten past. From the plaques around town pointing out landmarks, such as the President’s house being a stop on the underground railroad, to the cemetery that is home to local heroes, Lewisburg’s history is not one easily forgotten.

During the uncertain times when COVID was impacting our everyday lives, a group of students found purpose by developing a documentary based on Bucknell’s involvement in the Civil War. By dedicating a little time every week, forgotten secrets are being put on display with the student-driven project “The Civil War at Lewisburg”.

When asked what it has been like working on this project, class of 2024’s Cat Jamison and Libby Nieporte explained “I think that after having our meetings or doing our research I noticed more around campus” while touching on how interesting it is to find how campus and dorms were during the Civil War.

However, this project has not been without challenges. The two admitted “the research aspect of this project has been the hardest part. There isn’t a lot of specific information about everyone who fought.” Despite this, the students developing the documentary have remained undeterred as they continue to keep unearthing Lewisburg’s Civil War secrets.

The documentary is in the editing phase and the two are now in search of new talent willing to aid in the final stretch of the telling of Lewisburg’s history. A request was made that those willing to help voice some characters or those good with video editing would join the team to make this documentary a reality.

“The Civil War at Lewisburg” is more than a documentary, it is a testement to what students with ambition can do. There is an amazing story waiting to be told, and these students will be the voice to bring it to life.
