Alumni Alana Jacko presents “What is a Greenway” to inform students of sustainability practices around Lewisburg.

Alana Jacko graduated from Bucknell University in 2015 with degrees in both English Literary Studies and Studio Arts. She is known on campus for being the creator of the club Writers of Rohan. Following a lifetime of joy involving outdoor activities and being surrounded by nature, Jacko is now the Communications Director at the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership.

The Susquehanna Greenway is a work in progress containing four branches that will span over 500 miles of pathway once completed. The west branch is the largest and most remote of the four branches and is known for its close connection with history. The north branch is described as beautiful with endless mountains as you continue to travel north. The middle section contains popular tourist destinations, such as the miniature Statue of Liberty, along with an intersection to the Appalachian trail and mountain range. When talking about the lower section, Jacko emphasized “You also get some really interesting geology going on since it is so deep”, along with pointing out the several activities relating to boating and sailing.

The Susquehanna Greenway Partnership promotes the greenway, trails, and river towns while providing many positive experiences and connections in the community. “They can connect people with each other as we get out and enjoy places together”, Jacko emphasized while reflecting on her experiences interacting with community members.

From an interactive map, lists of events and programs, newsletters, and an online shop the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership’s website is a great resource for those looking to explore trails and become an active member of the community. They are currently seeking volunteers for their garbage clean up in April, as well as people interested in participating in a photo contest, and those willing to join in full-day paddle trips. Susquehanna Greenway Partnership is also seeking an intern for the summer. The applications will be released in mid-February.

As Jacko continues to lead as the Communications Director at the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership it proves that the Susquehanna Greenway is not just a physical path but rather a thread connecting individuals, fostering shared experiences, and building a community focusing on sustainability. Join the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership and become an active participant in the story of connection, preservation, and community.
