From Lush Greenery to History

Take a step into back in time as you walk through Bucknell’s new greenway. The greenway is a 4-mile path that circles campus and connects it to the athletic fields and soon to be new dorms that are on the other side of Route 15. This path provides a safe route for students, staff, and community members alike to enjoy the beautiful landscape around Bucknell while protecting the surrounding environment.

This project is being continued by Amelia Peters: Greenway Presidential Fellow Class of 2028. The Public Writing for Media: Rhetoric for a Digital Age class had the pleasure of speaking with Amelia Peters to get an inside look at the development of this project. Miss Peters is working on the map of the path, the website, facilitating connections with staff and faculty on campus, and finding greenway affiliates.

Many ambitious plans are in the future for the Bucknell Greenway. These include detailed signage about various topics (civil war, art, the underground railroad, the history of Lewisburg, the cemetery, sustainability, etc.), gardens, and outdoor learning stations. The goal is that the greenway is primarily student run with clubs and organizations sponsoring sections of the trail to help with the upkeep of educational destinations on the path including their gardens.

The hope is that surrounding communities, students, staff, and faculty will all enjoy the greenway together. This connection could help bridge the gap between the Bucknell community and the surrounding communities while helping to forage a better appreciation for nature, history, and sustainability.

Outside of the Bucknell Greenway Project, Amelia Peters is a management major who loves sustainability. She always wanted to do something involving sustainability and when asked what she is most excited about, she explained “I am most excited for the gardens and the tree planting”.

The project is set to be completed in March 2024. When asked what could be done to help, Miss Peters explained “Tell everyone about the greenway because no one really knows about it… tell them it’s a good thing”. With its captivating beauty and endless educational opportunities it is time to lace up your shoes and get ready to enjoy another great thing about Lewisburg.
